Major General Sir Evan Gibb DSO [9] was a pioneer of Army mechanical transport. During a long military career he served in the South African War and World War 1, and was awarded the French Croix de Guerre and the Belgian Order of the Couronne. He oversaw the strategic deployment of labourers in support of battlefield objectives, and the salvaging of military hardware left behind at the end of the Great War, and in doing so he developed expertise in what would later come to be called logistics. The first British army rigid-framed, six-wheeled transport vehicle for carrying equipment and personnel was also developed under his supervision when he was Colonel-Commandant. A law enforcement vessel was named in his honour, and the Sir Evan Gibb is currently based at Gibraltar.
