Just after a gap in the churchyard wall is a memorial to Cecil D’Oyly-John [46] who claimed to be the illegitimate son of Augustus John (Welsh painter, draughtsman and etcher). A Rottingdean artist, he was brought up in South Africa. After WWII he became renowned for his sun-drenched Mediterranean landscapes, some of which were bought by The Queen Mother.
