George Avery Brooker [4] was struck by lightning while waiting for his passenger in a horse-drawn taxi, known as a "fly". The passenger he was waiting for was the son of the vicar, Reverend Arthur Thomas, who is at grave [20].
George did not own the vehicle he was driving: he worked as a driver for publican and transport proprietor Frederick Thomas, son of William 'Trunky' Thomas (grave [2]). He was sitting on the box seat waiting for the return journey when lightning struck, while a race was in progress. His body was removed from the carriage to a nearby shed where according to the local paper "a great throng gathered around him and an attempt was made to steal his scarf pin". The police apparently prevented the pin from being taken but the perpetrator "managed to slip away in the crowd".
