Here we find the memorial to James Leonard Avery [33] who worked at Hilder’s butchers in Whipping Post Lane [view]. This butchers (and its occupants) served as the inspiration for the Brown family in Enid Bagnold's (grave [29]) 'National Velvet'. It was also the original home of notorious butcher and Rottingdean smuggler Captain Dunk.
