A cross below a tree marks the resting place of Stephen Welfare [26] and his family. He ran the original White Horse Public House, whose horse-drawn bus competed with that of the Royal Oak. The bus also carried the Royal Mail at the time and was known by many as 'the coffin on wheels'.

Angela Thirkell (grave [13b]) remembered the journey from Brighton station on the 'White Horse' omnibus:

"It must have been a relic of early omnibus days in London, with seats beside the driver... There were other buses running between Rottingdean and Brighton, but they were vastly inferior. Those from the Royal Oak were indeed drawn by four horses, but they were such thin and jaded wisps that to drive behind them was a misery".
