James Snudden [25] was Chief Coastguard at Portobello, Telscombe. A row of coastguard cottages stood north of the A259 Coast Road, while his cottage on the south side is now The Smugglers’ Rest Public House [view].
The Royal Navy Register of Seaman's Services gives some interesting detail about James Snudden (original document below). He was born in Ryde, Isle of Wight, was only 5 foot 4 inches tall, with dark brown hair, dark hazel eyes and had a dark complexion. He had tattoo marks on his hands and feet - and a knife wound on his right leg below the calf. His character was noted as being 'very good'.
The last entry in his record at the point of his death (28th April 1880) simply states 'pensioned'.
