Life was not so kind to Hannah Durban [24], wife of coastguard William Henry Spain, who was buried under the second tree on your left in 1869 with five of her children, none of whom survived beyond their first year. They lived in the coastguard cottages at Black Rock, many of which were destroyed in 1897 when the cliffs at Black Rock collapsed, taking part of the coast road with it.
